A Day to Celebrate

It was a big weekend- Mother’s Day and Graduation! This card from my daughter was the highlight.

Later in the day another treat- hearing my name called at the University of Pennsylvania Graduation. It was a lot of years in the making- but I finished something that was near and dear to my heart. See the article below for details.

TV Money Expert Adds New Credentials to Her Financial Toolkit

PHILADELPHIA (May 13, 2012) – Television host Mary Caraccioli participated in graduation ceremonies at the University of Pennsylvania where she earned her Masters of Liberal Arts degree. Caraccioli’s concentration in the multi-disciplined program was money and leadership. Her thesis examined the interconnectedness of money and beauty as motivators and a source of stress in professional women’s lives.

Caraccioli said “Working toward this Master’s degree gave me the opportunity to step back from my day to day money reporting and really examine how money affects us emotionally. Through exhaustive research and one on one interviews I gained new insight into how money drives us and how it creates stress – no matter how big the paycheck.”

The Emmy® Award winning journalist is the host of the nationwide financial reality show “We Owe What?” produced by 6ABC WPVI-TV, airing on the Live Well Network and weekends on ABC owned stations in the nation’s top television markets. Bill Dunkelberg and his wife Sharon Javie are two remarkable individuals who work extremely well as a team. This Fall the Global Interdependence Center is honoring both of them with our prestigious Global Citizen Award. Bill has chaired GIC for many years and Sharon has served as our interim Executive Director more than once. They both embrace our mission about convening and creating dialogue about economic and financial policy and making that dialogue open, transparent and on-going.

To kick off the event on October 19th we will also have a selection of private briefings on newsworthy topics. I am very please to be co-chairing the event this year with my fellow board member Dom D’Ginto.

Mark Haines 1946-2011

There are a lot of big personalities working in the television industry. Throughout my career I have had the opportunity to work with some of the biggest personalities in the news business, particularly financial news. Those big personalities don’t always live up to their larger than life image. A clear exception was Mark Haines. Mark became famous on Wall St. and beyond for putting morning financial news on the map with Squawk Box and Squawk on the Street. I had the chance to work with Mark during the early days of money TV on CNBC’s World Business, Squawk’s predecessor. He was a big tough talking guy who came in at 4am carrying a travel coffee mug and wearing gray sweat pants. I was young, but looked liked a juvenile, with braces and wild curly hair. He didn’t relish the fact that he would have to train another newbie.

“OK what are we doing?” he would ask each morning. Occasionally, my reply would be followed by a, “Huh?” He was gruff but never demeaning. Then, about a month into my new job, he walked into the office saying Mary Fay, Mary Fay (his usual greeting for me). Only this morning he stopped a few feet shy of his desk and looked at me. I froze. Mark was a man of routine. He rarely deviated from it. He was supposed to take 4 more steps, put his mug down and then jump on the computer, and bang out his story about money supply. Instead he stopped and was looking at me. “My wife Cindy says good things about you. So you are okay in my book,” he said. That was it. No time for hugs or an explanation of why his wife felt that way. He took four more steps, put his coffee down and started striking the keyboard. But it was at that instant, I knew then and forever more, Mark would have my back. That support helped me grow into the job and strengthened my confidence. I am not sure I ever had the chance to say Thank you. So Mark, thank you for being kind to the newbie producer and showing me the ropes of a tough business. Thank you for your uncompromising attitude toward both guests and bosses. Thank you for showing me that the second half of your on air TV career can actually be way better than the first half. Thanking for showing me that it is not only OK to be yourself, it is imperative. The ayem will never be the same.

Friday I had the chance to interview a social media expert who can help any business, big or small, grow by harnessing the power of social media. Connor Raus got his GED after the 8th grade and went into business. I can’t wait to share what I learned from him with you. You will have to wait a few weeks for that one!

On the website this week you will see 3 new videos to help you make the most of your money. My buddy Dr. Lori returns to share her tips about buying souvenirs. She believes trinkets can be investments if you know what to look for- and you will after watching this segment. Once I have you in the road trip mood, I will show you a few tips to landing the cheapest airfare. It is getting harder to do- so get ready to take notes with this one. And finally we wrap up the week shopping. We look at the fun and the sometimes dark side of shopping therapy. Learn how to spot whether you are going overboard.

I am excited to report that a new season of Mary Talks Money kicks off this week.
We have some excellent stories to share with you. We hit topics like how to raise money for that unexpected emergency, strategies for finding scholarship money, how to end the feuds between you and your teenagers that are draining your energy and your wallet. We also tackle many interesting career issues like, finding a job in the exciting business of sports and when “over-qualified” becomes a code word for “too old.” And there is so much more on deck.

Mary Talks Money Debuts: Where to find it

Mary Talks Money made its debut on LiveWellHD TV this past week and on WPVI-TV. I am very excited about this show for two reasons:
1)We have great information for anyone trying to improve their financial situation and we present that info in plain English!

The Great Recession may be winding down, but it has changed many things permanently- which isn’t a bad thing. More isn’t always better. More credit card debt, more toxic toys, more waste in our landfills– not good. Less clutter allows us to think more clearly, to prioritize more easily. The net result of this- I believe- is that it will be easier for us to live up to our positive potential. A clear head helps you to focus- when we focus we can accomplish whatever we want. It isn’t necessarily easy- but it is possible. This is when the big ideas are born and the most amazing businesses are formed. They don’t have to be big– they just have to meet a need.
