By Mary Caraccioli

My work has me visiting families all over the country with one mission, to help them get in good financial shape. In order to help others, I have also had to make sure my own house is in order. So to keep within my own budget I have found fun and creative ways to save. Often that means buying something that someone else previously owned. Yep- used! Hey it is also good for the environment right? Reuse and recycle are part of my life.

But not every used item is worthy of making it into my home. Some used products create more problems or simply don’t last. So it begs the question, “What do you buy new and what do you buy used?”

My rule of thumb for buying “used” is like Warren Buffet’s rule for buying stocks, I buy what I know. So, if I know what I am looking at and can tell if it is well made and in good shape and if I can properly clean it- I buy used. If it is something that is too complicated for me or my pals to assess- I walk away and buy new. Why? Because sometimes buying used is literally buying someone else’s problems. Here is a quick list on what is on my “buy used” list and what isn’t.

Buy used: un-upholstered furniture- my dining room table, end table, dressers, and coffee tables are all second hand and are all fabulous. They are more attractive and better constructed than a lot of new furniture and they make my home unique. I also spent a lot less for this great look than I would have for the same quality new.

Some pieces I have refinished myself, others were already in great shape. The materials I have had the most luck with are wood, Lucite or acrylic, marble and granite. These materials are easy enough for me to clean. I also look for pieces that are easy to inspect. I make sure they are in proper working order before I buy.

Buy New: I Don’t buy used upholstered furniture. Maybe it is all the news about bedbugs that freaked me out- but I see old upholstery as a recipe for disaster. If you can do the reupholstering yourself it may be worth it, but hiring someone else to do it can be expensive. This is where I buy new.

The only exception to this is dining room chairs. Re-upholstering the seat cushions is easy and cheap. I have done it myself. So buy those chairs used if you find a set that is sturdy, well made and cheap.

Buy Used: Kids clothes. I like buying used play clothes for kids. They out grow them so quickly- I hate to waste my money on new outfits that will just be destroyed at the playground. With the second hand clothes I always do a serious wash in hot water to kill the germs. Also make sure there are no holes – I don’t want to bring anyone’s moth problems to my house. When we outgrow the clothes I pass them on to friends, family or charities ASAP. I don’t let them pile up.

Buy Used: Plastic toys – These types of toys are easy to clean before we use them. Just make sure they have no small parts. Small desks or tables or sturdy chairs are great to get second hand. If it is easy to inspect and easy to clean then I will get it used.

Buy New: Plush, stuffed toys and toys with hair: Yes you can put some of these toys in the washer before you give them to your child, but they are never the same after a wash. If you’ve ever tried to de-tangled mangled doll hair (I have) you know it is a losing battle. Save the heartache and buy new.

Buy used: Sports Equipment: Some of the second-hand sports retail stores have good deals, but I find the best deals are with your own team. Put a note up or let other parents know you are interested in buying second hand equipment. You may be able to organize a swap or a team fundraiser using donated used gear. Balls, bats, tennis racquets, hockey sticks, sometimes even the pads are okay of you can clean them properly before you hand them to your youngster. One respected hockey re-seller showed me how they steam clean some of the used gear before selling it. Make sure you can get any item that is worn free of dirt and germs before you buy.

Another hint: talk to the pro, at the end of the season they often have demo equipment that they sell for a song. I got my new (used) tennis racquet this way.

Buy New: Child car seats or cribs should always be bought new. There are too many safety issues with how they are assembled and installed. You need to have the original directions. There have also been recalls for these products. With our children’s safety on the line, splurge on new for these. Even when you buy new check the government recall list regularly to make sure the product is safe. http://www.recalls.gov/

Buy Used: Strollers I have bought several of these used but only upon inspection. I live in the city and instead of a minivan or SUV my family’s all-terrain vehicle is a stroller. We’ve gone through a few, because we use them like crazy. I have saved hundreds of dollars off of expensive strollers, because I bought them used.

Now when it comes to strollers, I know what I am looking at when I see them and can if they are in good shape. Lots of folks get strollers as gifts and the type they get doesn’t fit their lives. So you can usually find what you are looking for in nearly new condition with the owners manual still intact.

Caution: Be careful of the super premium brand name strollers- you know the brands the Hollywood stars have for their kids. There are counterfeits on the market and the markdowns on the authentic one’s aren’t great in the used market. If you want super high end buy new.

Buy Used: Textbooks - I have been back at school twice since getting my undergrad degree and I have discovered the beauty of buying my textbooks used. I pay a lot less and then I resell as soon as I am finished with them to get the most cash for the resale. Don’t sit on old textbooks long because new editions make the old ones less valuable. (Bonus hint- most schools keep several copies of all textbooks at the library- try to get them at the library first before you buy).

Buy New: Appliances are something I will only buy new. Newer models are more energy efficient and have warranties. Without knowing how well an appliance was cared for and maintained by the previous owner means you could be buying trouble. A faulty appliance can be a fire hazard, or using an appliance without the directions can lead to injury. Avoid the hassles and buy new.

Buying used, is not only cheaper it is greener by keeping stuff out of landfills. It is also very important for my daughter to see that we don’t live in a disposable world. I like to say If I take care of my stuff, it may help take care of me later!

Okay you did what you said you wouldn’t do. You are already beating yourself up, so a smack from me won’t help. Instead, I want to help you right the ship and keep that spending binge from haunting you for years to come. Here are my 5 tips for getting your act together to pay off the holiday and have a great debt-free new year.

1) Stop all unnecessary spending now! Hide the cards and vow to pay cash or use a debit card for all your spending until the debts are gone. Don’t take a vacation or splurge on any new stuff for yourself (or anyone else) until you do that. This serves two purposes: it reduces and eliminates your credit card debt and it is a great deterrent. That pain will stop you from indulging next time

2) Get a re-payment plan together. This means taking a hard look at how much money you bring in each month and how much you really spend. Figure out how much is leftover and apply it all to paying off that debt. If you don’t earn enough, cut more spending or make more money.

3) Attack the debt. Get your taxes done early if a refund is coming your way. Can you consolidate your debt to one lower interest card? If not, there are two approaches you can take. Either go after the card with the lowest balance first, for a psychological boost, or go after the card with the highest interest first, for a financial boost.

4) Let everyone in the family and maybe even your friends know about your plan. I know we hate to talk about our money mess-ups- but it could help eliminate any peer pressure spending and who knows you may get a great idea on how to raise money from a friend. Make it fun and make it a group challenge.

5) Don’t do it again! Next year, next vacation, next temptation- use cash or a debit card and live within your means. Doing anything else is so- pre-precession. Worrying about debt creates stress that shortens your life and makes your time here less enjoyable. In the words of the great Cher, snap out of it!

Next 30 Days are Best Time of Year to Buy Car

This was sent to me from my pal Jeannie Fallon from Edmunds.com
SANTA MONICA, Calif. — August 25, 2010 — Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information, today announced that according to its latest update of True Market Value® (TMV®) Predicted Price Trends at http://www.edmunds.com/tmv/alerts.html, more than 90 percent of new cars are expected become less expensive (or to sell at their current relatively low prices) in the next 30 days.

“The next 30 days will be the best time of this year to get a great deal on a car, as there is still sufficient selection of old model year bargains and prices are generally trending downward,” stated Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Jessica Caldwell.

Edmunds.com estimates that just under 80 percent of new cars and trucks sold today are 2010 model year vehicles, but that dated inventory is declining quickly as dealerships are seeing more traffic from bargain-hunters who have been anxiously waiting for year-end sales. Today’s shopper are finding particularly low prices on the 2010 Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-series and other models that have been updated for 2011.

Based on seasonal trends, Edmunds.com analysts anticipate that within the next 30 days, automakers may boost incentives for:

· Large SUVs such as the Chevrolet Suburban, the Ford Expedition, and the Nissan Armada

· Large vans including Chevrolet’s Express line and Ford E-Series wagon line.

· Premium luxury cars such as the 2010 BMW 7 Series, 2010 Audi A8, 2010 Mercedes Benz S-Class and 2010 Volvo S80.

“No dealer wants 2010 model year inventory on their lots in 2011, but that is especially true for the premium luxury segment whose shoppers tend to be among the most image-conscious. These vehicles are largely languishing on dealers’ lots right now, and as we get closer to year-end it will become easier to make a deal on one,” noted Analyst Richard Arca. “We also expect dealers to be increasingly flexible when negotiating prices for last year’s hybrid vehicles like the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, 2010 Honda Insight, 2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid and 2010 Toyota Camry Hybrid. Gas prices aren’t high enough to motivate shoppers to consider them, especially when incentives are fairly generous on some of their non-hybrid counterparts. Dealers are ready to clear out the old inventory and may make some compelling deals, especially as some new competitors are entering the market.”

On the flip side, consumers will pay a premium to buy newly redesigned models such as the 2011 BMW 5-Series, 2011 Ford Fiesta, 2011 Infiniti QX56 and 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, given the economy, a few months after they become available, it is likely their prices will fall too.

One of the great things about my job is that each day I get to dip my toe into a new world. With every story I cover, I meet new and often interesting people and for just a few hours, I get to live in their world. This week I spent time with author and blogster Kristen Hagopian. She wrote the book Brilliant Frugal Living. She is a whirlwind. Funny and non-stop with the snappy dialogue. But Kristen’s genius is living frugally. She gave up her $50K job when she had kids, after she and her husband decided to make one paycheck work. Instead of sulking about what she had to give up, Kristen is joyful about each dollar she saves.

The day I spent with her she took me to her secret weapon grocery store, BB’s in Morgantown, PA. BB’s sells overstock and damaged products from the big grocers. It was a delight finding high quality organic and other top quality products for literally next to nothing. But it was even more fun watching Kristen come to life as we stumbled upon organic dark chocolate bars, usually 3 or 4 dollars a piece for 25-cents. She momentarily forgot about our shoot and grabbed the stack. This catch wasn’t going to anyone else.

The same day she snagged a $70 Little Tykes desk for her daughter for $20, thanks to craigslist. The beauty of Kristen’s lifestyle is not just consuming cheaply, it is about using what you have and thinking things through before you spend money. Those things ultimately reduce the quantity and increase the quality, of what she and her family consume. Keep your eye on LiveWellHD.com to fin out when my stories with Kristen will air. In the meantime check out her blog at HTTP://BRILLIANTFRUGALLIVING.WORDPRESS.COM/

One request I get from parents is, “how can I teach my kids to be better with their money?” I say start early. Begin by showing them how you make decisions. Can you explain to a 6 year old why buying a gallon of milk may be a better deal than buying a quart? These types of lessons have impact on our kids. Engage them in your thought process when it comes to money decisions and encourage them to challenge you. If you do that you’ve taken the most important step– you’ve got the conversation started! -Mary

I have noticed an interesting trend as the nation continues to claw out of the ugly recession. While the job picture remains bleak, those who do have jobs seem to be ready to exhale and do a little shopping. The financial collapse of a year ago triggered a period of uncertainty that lasted thru most of July. Even if you had a job, you probably knew someone who lost theirs, or you looked at your retirement savings and saw 10 years worth of growth wiped out. That alone can rain on a shopping spree parade. But as the stock market has improved (the Dow up 28% over the past 6 months. It saw a 15% jump in the 3rd Quarter alone – its best quarter since 1939) that has helped those who aren’t looking for work– feel better. As a result– they are cautiously loosening the purse strings and giving into that pent up demand to shop. Many economists have asked whether we can have a sustained recovery with such high unemployment? It is a good question, but one of the best things the people with jobs can do to help those without jobs, is to dip their toe back in the water and spend a little. I don’t mean the out of control, over-extended spending we saw in the boom that led to the bust. Most of us couldn’t do that today, even if we wanted to. What appears to be happening is that rational spending is once again taking place. As businesses and consumers invest their cash in worthy products and services– more people will be needed to meet that demand.

Most forecasters say the recession is over, and their focus now is on the future. How can we have sustained growth, that creates jobs, that does not lead to runaway inflation? Consumers are starting to do their part, and so are some businesses (more need to step up). It’s also time for rational spending to return to Washington, in this case– it’s reigning in the purse– not loosening it. A case was made at the height of the crisis, that huge spending was needed to right the ship. That appears to be happening. If those in-charge want to end up as heroes in the history books, they need to show a smart strategy for deficit reduction that keeps the U.S. competitive in the global economy. Smart programs that will pay dividends to our children are worth the investment. But spending to spend– can no longer be justified. The American consumer appears to have learned their lesson.. lets hope our lawmakers have too. -Mary

BTW here is Economist Joel Naroff’s take on today’s August Spending and Income Report. Joel’s commentary has been right on this year. He is the President of Naroff Economic Advisors.

INDICATOR: August Spending and Income

KEY DATA: Consumption: +1.3%; Disposable Personal Income: +0.1%

IN A NUTSHELL: “The wallets were dusted off and it wasn’t just to trade in the clunkers for cash.”

WHAT IT MEANS: The iceberg is melting. Consumers had given the malls the cold shoulder but that seems to have changed. In August, spending grew at the fastest pace in eight years. Yes, “Cash for Clunkers” played a major role in generating the huge increase but it was not the only reason people parted with their hard-earned cash. They also went out and spent a lot on soft goods. In addition, demand for services rose solidly. In other words, we shopped ‘till we got tired. Can households keep up this level of spending? That is not clear. Incomes rose only modestly. However, one good sign was that wages and salaries continue to post gains despite the declining number of jobs. As the payroll losses ease, we could see income growth improve and that would put a floor under spending. In the interim, people are drawing down their savings, which fell for the third consecutive month. As for inflation, there was a large rise in energy costs that pumped up the rate but excluding food and energy, prices remain well contained.

MARKETS AND FED POLICY IMPLICATIONS: Instead of restraining growth, consumption is likely added solidly to GDP in the third quarter. While government policies, especially “Cash for Clunkers” hyped spending, the good news was that people are out buying lots of other things. However, as I have warned in my discussion of the coming “head fake”, don’t expect the solid growth we should get to be repeated. Ultimately, income growth will drive consumer spending and businesses seem to be intent on watching their wage costs carefully. Thus, while new claims for unemployment insurance are generally edging downward, they are doing so only slowly. It will be quite a few months before we see job increases rather than losses and even then the increase could be modest. That argues for minimal income gains and sluggish consumption growth. Still, it is nice to see that there are ways to get people to buy, even if it takes taxpayers dollars. Now they have to start standing on their own. The Fed is taking this all in but so far is in no hurry to start raising rates. But I still believe that once they start, they will do so with “alacrity”, as Dallas Fed President Fisher recently stated. Maybe that limb I am out on is not that thin.

Lucky me– I live within one day’s drive of 25% of the nations’ population. It can be a convenience for sure, but living along the I-95 corridor is no picnic if you actually have to drive it. I can name all of the usual suspects for traffic jams– the ones in Connecticut (which are the most irritating), the DC traps and the North and South Jersey mile markers of misery. As a result, I have learned to love Amtrak over the years. Yes it is expensive and that makes the occassional delays seem worse than they really are. But the rails have been kinder to me than the road, so I have been a loyal Amtrak patron despite the fat fares.

When the economy nosedived after last year’s financial shock, I, like most of my fellow Americans, became a little more of a tight wad. I have cut out a lot of my unnecessary spending and have tried to be smarter and more strategic with my personal finances. That is where the Bolt comes in. It is a bus (yes a lowly bus) that offers service from Boston to DC and all points in between for unbelievably cheap rates- generally $10 to $15 each way. Considering the cheap seats on Amtrak run me between 45 and 90 bucks each way, (the first class Acela is even more) I had to give the Bolt a try.

Here is my Bolt Bus review: The buses are new, clean and comfortable, with wifi and electrical outlets at each seat. Most of the fleet is made up of 2008 model year motor coaches and the fellow passengers are generally professionals or students. Missing was the bus depot and the riff-raff and idling fumes that come with bus stations in every city. The Bolt picks up and drops off at convenient on street locations.

All this is great, but the real test for me was time. Traffic can kill a packed schedule. I got a pretty realistic taste on my Tuesday morning rush hour trip north to New York. An accident in New Jersey followed the typical script; The Bolt Bus was parked on the NJ Turnpike for a solid hour (This is where I regretted not having my laptop and started wondering why Apple doesn’t make a netbook). My iphone and all its apps (especially text) saved me from a panic attack. We were an hour late getting to the stop in Manhattan. I had budgeted time for delays and was OK.

The return trip made me rethink the convenience of the on street passenger loading. You need to be at the stop 15 minutes before departure to secure your seat. This is kind of a joke. They don’t open the bus doors to greet you until about 5 or 10 minutes before the departure time. I showed up early and waited in the rain. The boarding could have been smoother. The people who showed up last pushed forward to the front of the line. Not necessary; if you have a ticket you get a seat on the Bolt. With Amtrak if you had a ticket and the train was oversold, you could ride, but possibly with no seat. The return trip was fast and smooth.

Final judgement: I would take it again- with my laptop. There is the occasional loud talker (except in the quiet car, Amtrak has the same problem), the rain, the morning delay, but nothing truly awful. The reality is in this economy, the Bolt Bus does what Amtrak does between Boston and DC for a lot less. If your schedule is really tight, I would opt for the train- it is faster and less likely to come to a grinding halt during rush hour. But if you have a little wiggle room and the fare is coming out of your pocket– then I suggest you consider it. What you save on a roundtrip is a dinner out, or that week’s contribution to the 529 plan.

For more information on the Bolt and Amtrak here are links to their websites.

www.boltbus.com

www.amtrak.com

www.megabus.com offers one way fares in the same coverage area for about the same price as the Bolt Bus. I have not tried it, but it may be another option for you.
